City Of Courts
This project is situated in the area of Ullevål in Oslo, along Bergs allé, which is a villa neighbourhood close to the city centre. The task of the project was to create an underground tennis court, so that the existing inflatable winter bubble could be avoided and replaced with a structure that has stronger architectural qualities. The project soon developed into adding two underground courts, allowing the same number of outdoor courts to remain available during the summer season.
The building was placed in a part of the site where the terrain is higher, so that it could work naturally with the landscape as both an entrance and a connection to the surrounding park. The offset between the two plateaus of outdoor courts became a natural point of access into the building. It was also important that the structure would not appear too tall, since the surrounding area is mainly characterised by lower residential housing.
